  The paper focuses on the maritime project entitled “VTS-Bot” which aims to exploit the innovative use of computer dialogue systems (aka ChatBots) to assist future Officers of the Watch (OOW) in acquiring maritime communication skills based on the IMO (International Maritime Organization) SMCP (Standard Marine Communication Phrases). As part of their training, deck and engineering cadets in the Merchant Marine are required to obtain a mandatory range of communication competencies in line with the IMO STCW code (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping, chapter II, table A-II/1). The VTS-Bot developed within the project is freely available online and allows students to practise the relevant maritime communication at their own individual learning pace, thus establishing a student-centred educative approach. The exercises contained in the ChatBot target the compulsory Part A of the IMO SMCP used in VHF communication, and provide authentic maritime scenarios wherein the cadet conducts in real time a simulated maritime conversation with the ChatBot.

  Objectives: (A) To gain insights into the experiences of patients invited to view their doctors' visit notes, with a focus on those who review multiple notes; (B) to examine the relationships among fully transparent electronic medical records and quality of care, the patient-doctor relationship, patient engagement, self-care, self-management skills and clinical outcomes.
  Design: Mixed methods qualitative study: analyses of survey data, including content analysis of free-text answers, and quantitative-descriptive measures combined with semistructured individual interviews, patient activation measures, and member checks.
  Setting: Greater Boston, USA.
  Participants: Patients cared for by primary care physicians (PCPs) at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center who had electronic access to their PCP visit notes. Among those submitting surveys, 576 free-text answers were identified and analysed (414 from female patients, 162 from male patients; 23-88 years). In addition, 13 patients (9 female, 4 male; 58-87 years) were interviewed.
  Results: Patient experiences indicate improved understanding (of health information), better relationships (with doctors), better quality (adherence and compliance; keeping track) and improved self-care (patient-centredness, empowerment). Patients want more doctors to offer access to their notes, and some wish to contribute to their generation. Those patients with repeated experience reviewing notes express fewer concerns and more perceived benefits.
  Conclusions: As the use of fully transparent medical records spreads, it is important to gain a deeper understanding of possible benefits or harms, and to characterise target populations that may require varying modes of delivery. Patient desires for expansion of this practice extend to specialty care and settings beyond the physician's office. Patients are also interested in becoming involved actively in the generation of their medical records. The OpenNotes movement may increase patient activation and engagement in important ways.

  The paper compares the pedagogical advantages of two simulation types used for training verbal maritime communication. It tests the hypothesis that “low-fi” simulation using online web conference software, specifically ‘chat’ or messaging, is a valid complementary tool for the instruction of Maritime English and full-mission simulation. Based on a series of exercises involving multi-national and multi-lingual students, various linguistic patterns are determined and compared to audio recordings of full-mission simulation. Probability of superiority effect sizes is computed to quantify the observed effects. The findings corroborate the proximity of language patterns found in low-fi and full-mission simulation. Pedagogical implications are discussed, and future research possibilities are outlined.

  This paper describes how MT is integrated into a course project in the Master programme of the International Technical Communication course of study at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. The students who are participating in the MA programme can choose to study full-time or part-time, i.e. all courses are being taught as distance learning courses and in-class courses alternately. This concept is one of the reasons that the students are very different/diversified regarding their professional background, their age, years of working experience etc. Some students have already been working as translators for years or decades others have just finished a BA programme as a technical writer or translator, and again others have so far been working as engineers or teachers. This aspect produces very interesting comments in the chat room and/or in class as well as in the results of their work and in their final reports. An observation that one can make and that can be seen as a side-effect when students who have such varying curricula and different professions who are working together is, that their view onto the actual project work is fairly different as well. While technical writers nowadays have a focus on controlling the language prior to the actual writing process, technical translators do not have in mind that the source texts they have to use as working basis, follow any rules at all. This may be because of the negative experiences technical writers have made in the past regarding the quality of the source texts. However, this is an additional outcome of the course and mentioned here, yet it is not intended to be examined in detail in this article. The course project is based on the idea of combining controlled language and a pre-editing step in order to achieve an effective way to prepare contemporary technical documentation for rule-based machine translation (RBMT). I will explain what I mean by “contemporary” within the context of technical documentation and why this attribute plays an important role within the decision-making process to integrate CL, pre-editing and MT in the course project, which also includes practical exercises for the students. In addition, the reason why RBMT is the MT method chosen within the context of multilingual text production is explained.
