  Deep learning-based automated image analysis (DL-AIA) has been shown to outperform trained pathologists in tasks related to feature quantification. Related to these capabilities, the use of DL-AIA tools is currently extending from proof-of-principle studies to routine applications, including the evaluation of patient samples (diagnostic pathology), regulatory safety assessment (toxicologic pathology), and recurrent research tasks. To ensure that DL-AIA applications are safe and reliable, it is critical to conduct a thorough and objective generalization performance assessment to evaluate an algorithm’s ability to accurately predict patterns of interest and possibly evaluate model robustness (ie, the algorithm’s capacity to maintain predictive accuracy on images from different sources). In this article, we review the practices for performance assessment in veterinary pathology publications by which 2 main approaches were identified: (1) exclusive visual performance assessment (ie, eyeballing algorithmic predictions) plus validation of the model’s application utilizing secondary performance indices and (2) statistical performance assessment (alongside other methods), which requires creation of a test set with ground truth labels that is a hold-out from model development. This article compares the strengths and weaknesses of statistical and visual performance assessment methods. Furthermore, we discuss relevant considerations for rigorous statistical performance evaluation including metric selection, test data set image composition, ground truth label quality, resampling methods such as bootstrapping, statistical comparison of multiple models, and evaluation of model stability. It is our conclusion that visual and statistical evaluation have complementary strengths and a combined approach provides the greatest insight into the DL model’s performance and sources of error.

  This paper analyses the potential of a novel hydraulic variable inertia flywheel to improve standby power systems when attached to directly grid-connected electrical machines. Conventional standby power systems often require several seconds to reach full operation after a grid outage. During this time, critical loads may be left without power, unless supported by an additional uninterruptible power supply system. By flange-mounting a hydraulic variable inertia flywheel to an existing grid-connected electrical machine, emergency power can be provided immediately without the need for power electronics. The ability of the hydraulic variable inertia f lywheel to discharge at a quasi-constant speed offers improved frequency and voltage stability. The performance of the hydraulic variable inertia flywheel is compared with traditional flywheels of equivalent inertia and energy content across the two most common machines. The simulation results identify the most appropriate machine- f lywheel configuration to complement standby power systems. Combining a hydraulic variable inertia f lywheel with an electrically excited synchronous machine provides the most stable voltage and frequency support. The application of the widely used induction machine is found to be not preferable. Beyond acting as supplementary technology for standby power systems, combining directly grid-connected electrical machines with flywheels also offers secondary and tertiary benefits.

  In the resection of cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) of the auricle, the challenge lies in ensuring a safe excision with adequate surgical margins in an aesthetically and functionally sensitive area, while keeping the resulting defect as small as possible. To contribute to achieving this goal, the present study is the first to investigate the potential of confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) as a method of optical biopsy for cSCC.

  This paper synthesizes insights from a scoping workshop funded by the Volkswagen Foundation that focused on reading competencies in the digital age. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the current state of research, identify actionable next steps and outline considerations for future work in the context of learning to read in a digital world. The conference brought together German researchers with a wide range of backgrounds and expertise in reading research including computer science, psychology, language processing and educational science. Presentations and discussions during the conference centred broadly on potentials and challenges of learning to read and reading support in the context of digitalization—focusing on issues related to artificial intelligence and app-based learning. Results of the workshop and subsequent writing sessions include a synthesis of key considerations and core questions for the field of research on digital approaches to support reading. Findings highlight the need for the field at large to identify and develop digital tools for diagnosing readers’ abilities and providing them with the support they need, and to do so with increased interdisciplinary collaboration, open science practices and communication among scholars.

  Automated measurements of anisokaryosis in canine cutaneous mast cell tumors (ccMCTs) have been shown to be predictive of survival, but questions remain regarding the intratumoral distribution of anisokaryosis. Whole-slide images of 96 ccMCTs were analyzed with a deep learning-based segmentation algorithm to quantify anisokaryosis using the standard deviation (SD) of the nuclear area. In 35/96 cases, \textgreater5\% of the non-overlapping 256 × 256 µm 2 regions were hotspots (SD ≥11.5 µm 2 ). Regions selected by 7 pathologists within these 35 cases matched hotspots in 32\% of the instances. Outcome analysis (tumor-related death) based on single tumor regions yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.901 for pathologist-selected hotspots, falling between random region selection (AUC: 0.862) and 90th-percentile targeted selection (AUC: 0.956). Whole-slide analysis of the hotspot proportion predicted survival with an AUC of 0.956, with 20\% of hotspots as a prognostically meaningful threshold. Whereas pathologists-selected tumor regions are prognostically meaningful for nuclear morphometry, whole-slide analysis may provide additional prognostic information.

  This study investigates the effectiveness of a hydraulic-pneumatic flywheel system integrated into the rotor of a wind turbine for structural load reduction. The analysis uses the state-of-the-art aeroelastic simulation tools OpenFAST and HAWC2, coupled with a novel Simulink based flywheel and control model, to evaluate fatigue loads mitigation abilities of the flywheel. Fatigue load simulations are performed for cases with and without the flywheel system, with a specific focus on the fatigue life of the tower. The findings indicate that different flywheel control functionalities exhibit varying levels of influence on tower fatigue loading in both simulation environments. A fatigue-life extension of up to 20% is achieved, demonstrating the potential of flywheel control strategies for structural load mitigation.

  Wind turbulence introduces variations and oscillations in the power output of wind turbines and vibrations of wind turbine components. Higher turbulence intensities lead to significant wind speed fluctuations, necessitating frequent aerodynamic regulation of the rotor in near-rated operating points. Reducing these fluctuations stabilizes the operation of the wind turbine, which reduces power fluctuations in the grid, and which reduces wear and tear in the wind turbine. This study investigates a hydraulic-pneumatic flywheel system designed to leverage these fluctuations by absorbing excess energy during gusts (charging) and releasing it during lulls (discharging), effectively smoothing the power output. The charging phase of this system introduces an additional electrical load by driving hydraulic pumps with electric motors, thereby increasing the generator torque. Simultaneously, fluid movement along the rotor blades induces Coriolis forces, generating a negative torque that slows down the rotor. This flywheel system application reduces rotor speed and pitch angle excursions during peak wind events by storing surplus energy. When the wind speeds drop below rated wind speed due to turbulence, the stored energy is released by transferring the fluid from the tip accumulators to storage tanks in the blade roots, reducing the flywheel inertia, and hence, releasing energy. This bidirectional functionality allows mitigating the downsides of turbulence. The objective of this study is to assess the performance of the flywheel system in stabilizing power output and to quantify the energy yield improvement, with a particular focus on the influence of turbulence intensity.
