  Sustainable operations and sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) have become a highly relevant topic for scientific research and management, as well as policy-making practice. Despite surging growth in extant research, the need for theoretical and conceptual substantiation persists, and large opportunities for further research remain unexploited. This paper responds to the need for a conceptual foundation and, therefore, aims at providing a structured agenda for future research areas in SSCM. Based on an abductive reasoning approach, SSCM constructs and concepts are gathered from existing literature and recombined into a comprehensive conceptual SSCM framework. Areas and directions for future SSCM research, as suggested in earlier studies, are summarized, positioned in the framework, and outlined to stimulate further SSCM research activities. To overcome the lack of holistic research in the field, sophisticated techniques and integrated systems to support decision-making are required to tackle related issues’ complexity. Therefore, this paper’s contribution lies in the synthesis of state-of-the-art literature to provide a more comprehensive view of SSCM. Researchers may find promising recommendations and a suitable foundation for future studies, while practitioners may find helpful orientation and guidance for decision- and policy-making.

  Environmental simulations allow for an easy and safe acquisition of knowledge about hard-to-reach habitats. We present a mixed-reality simulation that enables the user to convert (parts of) an arbitrary place like his or her own living room into a maritime habitat, using the example of the Baltic Sea. The user explores the virtual underwater world by walking in the real world. Typical characteristics and elements of the simulated habitat are integrated by adjusting light refraction and textures, and by adding animals, plants, and stones. The virtual animals respond to the user s movement. Rearranging real world objects causes the virtual world to change its appearance as well. User tests show that the environmental simulation provides an authentic insight into the Baltic Sea habitat and is well received with regard to the overall user experience. However, for first-time users, conveying more formal knowledge does not seem to work as well (yet) as compared to a conventional textbook approach.

  The Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is a proven topology in HVDC, but it is also a suitable solution for medium voltage applications such as wind turbines. To increase the modularity and the scalability of this topology for medium voltage applications, a real-time communication bus between the submodules and the central control unit is implemented as an efficient way of control. This real-time communication is realized using EtherCAT communication. To verify the advantages of this control strategy a 3-kV 350-kVA demonstrator of a medium voltage MMC topology with EtherCAT communication is constructed and set up. The description and the analysis of this demonstrator with focus on the EtherCAT communication are presented in this paper. The communication path, the synchronization and the control including the modulation method are discussed, investigated and validated within this paper.
