  The implementation of computerized critical care information systems (CCIS) can improve the quality of clinical care and staff satisfaction, but also holds risks of disrupting the workflow with consecutive negative impacts. The usability of CCIS is one of the key factors determining their benefits and weaknesses. However, no tailored instrument exists to measure the usability of such systems. Therefore, the aim of this study was to design and validate a questionnaire that measures the usability of CCIS. Following a mixed-method design approach, we developed a questionnaire comprising two evaluation models to assess the usability of CCIS: (1) the task-specific model rates the usability individually for several tasks which CCIS could support and which we derived by analyzing work processes in the ICU; (2) the characteristic-specific model rates the different aspects of the usability, as defined by the international standard “ergonomics of human-system interaction”. We tested validity and reliability of the digital version of the questionnaire in a sample population. In the sample population of 535 participants both usability evaluation models showed a strong correlation with the overall rating of the system (multiple correlation coefficients ≥0.80) as well as a very high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha ≥0.93). The novel questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument to measure the usability of CCIS and can be used to study the influence of the usability on their implementation benefits and weaknesses.

  This paper compares ESP communication by non-native speakers of Maritime English with communication outside a nautical setting in order to profile its structural idiosyncrasy. Vocabulary growth, word frequencies, lexical and key word densities, and grammar diversity as dependent linguistic variables observed in transcribed full-mission simulation exercises are contrasted to the Brown Corpus, the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English and the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP). Using quantitative linguistics, inherent structural patterns of nautical team communication are identified and similarities and variations highlighted. Significant differences found in all linguistic features are gauged by means of the Probability of Superiority (PS) effect size. A linguistic profile is created which quantifies the observed language patterns and provides a quantitative model for the linguistic genre of this particular discourse community. The model fills the gap of quantitative research on empirical bridge team communication samples and delivers a valid tool for estimating the magnitude of observed linguistic effects.

  Formal models that support multi-criteria decision making represent a strongly growing area in sustainable supply chain management research. However, uncertainties and risks are seldom considered in quantitative models for green supply chain (SC) design. The paper at hand suggests a hybrid approach to configure an eco-efficient SC for a new product under consideration of economic and environmental risks. Discrete-event simulation is applied to assess the financial, operational and environmental performance of different SC configuration options while the value-at-risk concept is adapted to evaluate related SC risks. The analytic hierarchy process is employed to solve the resulting multi-criteria decision problem of choosing the best option. The approach is illustrated at a case example of a fast moving consumer goods manufacturer.

  Immer mehr Produkte, die immer umfangreichere Funktionen anbieten und damit einen großen Dokumentationsaufwand erzeugen, werden im Zuge der Globalisierung weltweit vermarket. Dabei ist es nicht nur der gute Ton, der die Unternehmen antreibt, den Verbrauchern die technische Dokumentation in den entsprechenden Landessprachen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Für viele Produkte wird vom Gesetzgeber rechtssichere Dokumentation verlangt. Doch wie und von wem wird heute mehrsprachige technische Dokumentation erstellt? Und welche Rolle spielt regulierte Sprache1 für die Erstellungs- und Übersetzungsprozesse in der Fachkommunikation? Dieser Artikel erläutert, warum und inwiefern der Einsatz von regulierter Sprache in der mehrsprachigen Fachkommunikation noch ein Thema ist bzw. auch in Zukunft sein wird. Dabei werden zunächst die Textproduzenten ins Visier genommen, bevor die Bedeutung von technischer Dokumentation betrachtet wird, um dann in den Übersetzungsprozess zu schauen. Abschließend werden die Informationen für ein Fazit und Ausblick betrachtet und aufgearbeitet.

  We present TouchScope, a hybrid multitouch interface for common off-the-shelf oscilloscopes. Oscilloscopes are a valuable tool for analyzing and debugging electronic circuits, but are also complex scientific instruments. Novices are faced with a seemingly overwhelming array of knobs and buttons, and usually require lengthy training before being able to use these devices productively. In this paper, we present our implementation of TouchScope which uses a multitouch tablet in combination with an unmodified off-the-shelf oscilloscope to provide a novice-friendly hybrid interface, combining both the low entry barrier of a touch-based interface and the high degrees of freedom of a conventional button-based interface. Our evaluation with 29 inexperienced participants shows a comparable performance to traditional learning materials as well as a significantly higher level of perceived usability.

  Vor dem Hintergrund des aktuell anstehenden Wahlkampfes zur Bundestagswahl 2017 stellt sich erneut die Frage nach Änderungen des Einkommensteuertarifs. Dabei stehen weniger grundsätzliche Reformen in der Tarifstruktur als vielmehr eine bessere Ausbalancierung des Tarifs unter den Aspekten der Reduzierung oder Beseitigung des sog. Mittelstandsbauches und der Entlastung insbesondere mittlerer Einkommensbezieher im Vordergrund. Gleichzeitig werden weitere Aspekte wie bspw. Änderungen in der Belastung von Beziehern höherer Einkommen diskutiert. Die vorliegende Schrift widmet sich zunächst der Frage, welche Kriterien als Maßstab für die Bewertung von Tarifreformalternativen dienen sollen. Wenn es darum geht, einen Steuertarif zu optimieren, so ist die nächstliegende Frage die nach dem geeigneten Beurteilungsmaßstab für Optimalität. Die ökonomische Theorie der optimalen Besteuerung dient als Ausgangspunkt für einige grundsätzliche Erwägungen und wird flankiert von einer Betrachtung des Verlaufs der Einkommensteuerquote, um den Spielraum für mögliche Steuersenkungen einzugrenzen. Da ein optimaler Tarif aus wissenschaftlicher Perspektive nicht unabhängig von Gerechtigkeitsvorstellungen abgeleitet werden kann, gilt im Anschluss das Augenmerk insbesondere den gegenwärtigen Reformzielen der Parteien. Unter den beiden Aspekten der Aufkommens- und der Verteilungswirkungen wird zunächst die gänzliche Abschaffung des Mittelstandsbauches betrachtet. Wegen der hohen Aufkommenseinbußen gilt der Fokus dann alternativen Tarifen und deren Entlastungswirkungen für die verschiedenen Steuerzahler. Dabei gilt die besondere Aufmerksamkeit der Entlastung mittlerer Einkommen sowie der Begrenzung des Aufkommensverlustes auf die vom BMF als finanzierbar eingestuften 15 Mrd. €.
