The topic
Global challenges such as climate change, water shortage and the lack of raw materials have increasingly been calling for sustainable and innovative solutions, especially in the last decade. The bioeconomy aims to produce, develop and use biological resources to meet the human needs for raw materials, products and services.
The projects
The international cooperation of Flensburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and the University of Jember (Indonesia) enabled students from both countries to perform research projects addressing these challenges. Five teams were working on a wide variety of different topics.
The SIMBAH team and the PROTEIN team dealt with "in-vitro meat" by investigating matrices for the growth of cells and the procution of recombiant growth factors, respectively. While the Protectionis aimed to use microbiological techniques to protect salmon in the food supply chain, the ACT team used algae for the prodcution of astaxanthin, a strong antioxidant used as a food supplement. Finally, the Bacteria team characterised Lignocellulotic bacteria from the Erek-Erek Geoforest Banyuwangi in Indonesia.
The conference
The results of the five projects will be presented in an online conference December 13th at 9 a.m. German time and 3 p.m. Indonesian time.
