CFD-Analysis and Aerodynamic Design of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT)

One of the recent projects of the CFD Consultants GmbH (CFDC) is the development of a large Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). VAWTs have a lot of advantages over the traditional wind turbines but offer one significant challenge: The aerodynamic loads are much higher and unsteady in any case. To achieve a fatigue resistant design, modern simulation methods – beginning with transient CFD calculations – must be applied. The lecture deals with aerodynamics of VAWTs, the modeling of the aerodynamics and the determination of the unsteady loads.

Prof. Dr. Volker Kassera, Managing Director, CFD Consultants GmbH
Prof. Dr. Volker Kassera studied Aerospace Technology from 1985 until 1991 at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). After five years of research work in the field of Flow-Induced-Vibrations he received a PhD from TUM in 1997. In 1996 he started in the industry as support engineer for the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software CFX (today ANSYS). In 1998 he co-founded CFD Consultants GmbH (CFDC) and is shareholder and managing director since then. In 2005 he started as lecturer at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in the field of CFD. Since 2019 he is member of the NAFEMS CFD Advisory Board.

The Wind Energy Technology Institute is organizing a series of lecture in the summer semester 2022. We welcome anyone interested in the wind industry to join us. We have invited lecturers from the various branches of the wind industry to speak about exciting topics. There will also be the opportunity for a short discussion after each of the talks.

Das Wind Energy Technology Institute (WETI) der Hochschule Flensburg veranstaltet im Sommersemester 2022 wieder eine Ringvorlesung und lädt alle Interessenten dazu ein! Es werden Referent*innen aus Industrie und Wirtschaft über spannende Themen aus der Windbranche referieren. Im Anschluss der Vorträge besteht die Möglichkeit im Rahmen einer Diskussionsrunde Fragen zu stellen und das Thema zu vertiefen.
