Computational Pathology – Humans Teach Machines and Machines teach Humans

Abstract

Pathologists play an essential role in diagnosing diseases, serving as the cornerstone of medical decision-making by establishing the "ground truth" that guides patient care. However, despite their expertise, human judgment in pathology is subject to inherent variability and occasional errors due to the complexity and subtlety of many disease presentations. In recent years, computational pathology has emerged as a powerful ally, enabling machines to learn from pathologists' expert knowledge and, in turn, offer consistent support in decision-making. This talk will explore the synergy between human expertise and machine intelligence: Pathologists deliver case descriptions and other labeled medical data that allow for the training of machine learning algorithms, to later support pathologists, again. Moreover, especially deep learning algorithms can also be used to discover yet unknown patterns.
