Renewable energy and sustainable development

The energy transition is currently one of the biggest transformation tasks for technology, the economy and society. We are meeting this challenge with solutions that we derive from current research together with our partners from industry and practice.

The Wind Energy Technology Institute (WETI) and the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (ZNES) call our campus their home and have established meaningful research structures in the energy field over the years. The two universities on our campus, FUAS and the Europa-Universität Flensburg, cooperate very closely in this field: through secondary memberships, joint research projects and joint degree programmes.

In these degree programmes we qualify the specialists and managers who will ensure sustainable value creation in our region and beyond. Whether it is technical solutions for the integration of wind turbines into the grid or open source software to optimize entire energy systems – our expertise is broad and we work across subject areas to contribute to making the turnaround in energy policy possible both in our region and around the world.

Research fields in this area

Wind

Due to the excellent conditions, wind energy is the backbone of the energy transition in Schleswig-Holstein. This is why we put a particular focus on wind power as a source of renewable energy at FUAS.

Heat

The importance of heat supply often is underestimated significantly in the public debate. The CO₂-free supply of process heat and heating energy is a crucial prerequisite for the success of the energy transition.

Grid integration

The transition to renewable energies will not be completed by simply replacing conventional power plants with wind power and photovoltaic systems. As the supply generated through renewables is volatile, the supply structures must be developed further significantly, both on a conceptual and a technological level.

Mobility

FUAS was founded as a Royal Danish School for Navigation in 1852, so connecting the topic of mobility with seafaring is in our DNA. But today technologies and concepts for electromobility on land also play a role in our research and teaching.

Hydrogen

The rise in the use of fossil fuels in the course of industrialisation is largely due to the combination of high energy density and good storage capacity. Future energy storage systems should have these properties, too. Here, hydrogen literally provides a link.

Transformation

Designing and implementing a sustainable supply of energy is not just the project of our age in terms of technology. Making the energy transition a success largely depends on support from politics and the society.

Research institutions in this field

Wind Energy Technology Institute

Since its foundation in 2010, the Wind Energy Technology Institute has taken research on wind energy in a storm. The researchers at the WETI are particularly interested in the control of wind turbines, questions on grid integration and tower concepts.

Center for Sustainable Energy Systems

Energy supply that is 100 percent renewable and does not damage the environment or fuel climate change any further. This is the main objective of the research at the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (ZNES).
