Our expertise in the maritime sector is based on a long tradition dating back to the founding of the Royal Maritime Steam Engineers' Academy in 1886. This makes Flensburg one of five maritime university locations in Germany. We provide a number of services on a very high level: practice-oriented degree programmes, further education as well as our expertise and infrastructure for partners in research and development.

The Centre for Maritime Studies in cooperation with the Maritime College as well as the Institute for Nautics and Maritime Technology (INMT) form a well-established structure for research activities and further education.

Our activities in the maritime field are closely linked to questions on climate change mitigation and therefore to our research profile Renewable energy and sustainable development.

Institute for Nautics and Maritime Technology (INMT)

Navigating big container ships through stormy seas without leaving Flensburg’s campus? Not a problem for our students in the INMT’s ship bridge simulator. Research and teaching is done here in stormy and in quiet seas.

Center for Sustainable Energy Systems

Energy supply that is 100 percent renewable and does not damage the environment or fuel climate change any further. This is the main objective of the research at the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (ZNES).
