Project description

The SCAS network of companies, research facilities and institutions has set itself the goal of realising systems, components, sensors, communication services and technologies for partially or fully autonomous ships. The network will not focus exclusively on the full autonomy of vehicles, but will also consider aspects of partial autonomy, such as assistance systems for automated docking.

Partners from research and industry will cooperate in the network in order to achieve common goals through research and development. A network management will support the initiation, moderation and organization of this cooperation. Cooperation projects will be initiated and supported in workshops with the network partners.

A special focus is placed on small and medium-sized technology companies. 11 SMEs with highly qualified know-how are members of SCAS.Some of them already have very good connections in the maritime industry.

From the outset, the network has placed particular emphasis on establishing contacts with international partners. Close contacts continue to exist with Finland, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands and South Korea. SCAS is also a member of the International Network for Autonomous Ships - INAS.

The Centre for Maritime Studies has promoted the idea of the practical implementation of an autonomous electric harbour ferry for the Flensburg Firth for the network and has found a number of alliances in the local economy and brought them together to form a consortium. Various funding measures are currently being investigated for implementation.

Funding for the SCAS network expired at the end of the year, but all partners are still in contact.
