Compensation of a disadvantage

There are many things that can make studying more difficult: a disability, an impairment or a chronic illness, taking care of children or relatives. Students who any of the above applies to, can apply for adjustments to compensate for their disadvantages.

Who can apply for a compensation of a disadvantage?

Students can file a request for adjustments, if

  • they have a disability, an impairment or a chronic disease
  • they are in maternity protection or on parental leave
  • they are taking care of their own children (who live with them and are under the age of 14) or for relatives in need of care with a recognised care level
  • and therefore have a disadvantage related to examinations and assessment

Why should I apply for an adjustment?

An adjustment to how you complete examinations or coursework can mean that you are allowed to use specific technical tools such as a laptop, magnifying glasses, spellcheckers or that the form of assessment or the time in which to complete it are adapted for you. You can request these adjustments for a limited period of time or for the entire duration of your studies.

How do I apply for adjustments?

By completing this form and sending it to the Examination Board (at pruefungsausschuss@hs-flensburg.de).

Compensation of a disadvantage: step by step

Who can advise and support me with my application?

Your e-mails to this address will reach both the Equal Opportunities Officer and the Diversity and Inclusion Officer. You can of course contact them individually and confidentially at any time.

What do I have to include in my application?

  1. If you have a disability or chronic illness, please hand in a medical certificate ideally including suggestions for measures and adjustments to compensate your disadvantage. (This does not have to include a medical diagnosis.)
  2. If your application relates to maternity protection, parental leave or your taking care of your own child(ren) under the age of 14, please include a copy of the birth certificate(s)
  3. If you are taking care of close relatives, please include a medical certificate confirming you are the caretaker for a relative with a recognised care level or include proof of the care allowance notification [Pflegegeldbescheid]

Where and how do I apply?

Send your application to the Examination Board via e-mail: prüfungsausschuss@hs-flensburg.de.

Where do I finf the rules and regulations on the compensation of a disadvantage?

The Schleswig-Holstein Higher Education Act [Schleswig-Holsteinische Hochschulgesetz (HSG)] stipulates that the special needs of students must be taken into account under § 3 para. 5. Further regulations are made by FUAS’ Principles of Assessment [Prüfungsverfahrensordnung (PVO)], § 20. Art. 3 para. 3 (2) of the German Basic Law and Art. 5 para. 2 of the UN CRPD also provide for compensation for disadvantages for equal educational participation.
