Certain websites are only accessible from the university network. That’s when you will need our VPN – if you log into the VPN, your laptop will be part of the university network.
Why do you need VPN?
You will need to be logged into our Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access websites such as Statista.de or the WISO.net data base. Our VPN will also let you log in to FUAS network drives. Simply put, what happens is this: If you activate the VPN connection, the internet traffic on your laptop or computer is encrypted, tunnelled and then decrypted again by FUAS’ firewall. Or, to say it differently, you enter the web from within FUAS because your laptop becomes a part of our university network once you activate the VPN connection.
VPN access
FUAS uses the Cisco VPN solution. So you will need the so-called Cisco AnyConnect Client.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
- You’ll need a Wi-Fi connection to connect.
- Once you've established a connection with your mobile device, it will always automatically connect to the VPN whenever a Wi-Fi connection is available. So be sure to turn off the VPN connection whenever you no longer need it.
- Please keep in mind that all your data will then be routed through the university's internet connection. It's best to avoid streaming videos (from YouTube or other services, for example) or downloading large files, and to disconnect as soon as you no longer need the connection.
Setup for a smartphone or tablet:
Go to the App Store or Google Play Store.
Search for Cisco Secure Client.
It looks like this:
Install it and open it.
On iOS:
- Go to Connections and select “Add VPN Connection…”.
- Enter “vpn.hs-flensburg.de” in the Server Address field.
- Click “Save.”
- In the “‘AnyConnect’ wants to add VPN configurations” window, click Allow.
- Then you’ll need to enter your phone’s PIN.
- Go to the main screen in the Cisco Secure Client app.
- From there, just click the slider to establish the connection. When the message appears, click “OK,” select the “HSFL Students” group, and enter your login information (only the ID, e.g., abcd1234—not your email address—and your password).
- Click “Connect” and then “OK.”
On Android:
- Agree to the Terms of Use.
- Tap “Connections.”
- Tap the “+” icon to add a connection.
- In the “Server Address” field, enter “vpn.hs-flensburg.de.”
- Tap Done.
- Go to the app’s home screen.
- Tap the slider to establish a VPN connection.
- If a message appears stating that a client certificate is required, tap “OK.”
- Select the “HSFL Students” group.
- Enter your login information (just the username, e.g., abcd1234—not your email address—and your password).
- Finally, click “OK.”
Here's how to proceed on a computer:
- Using a Windows or Mac computer, go to the following website: https://vpn.hs-flensburg.de
(Please note that the website https://vpn.hs-flensburg.de is not accessible from within the university.)
If there is a problem with the website’s security certificate, please click “Continue to this website (not recommended).” - In the window that appears, change the group to “HSFL Students” and then enter your Hochschule Flensburg login credentials*: username (e.g., abcd1234; do not use your email address with your first and last name) and your password.
- After logging in, the Cisco Secure VPN Client will be downloaded and installed automatically. Many modern browsers do not support automatic installation. If the automatic installation fails, a window will appear informing you of this. Download the client listed in the note and install it manually.
- Once the installation is complete, the Cisco VPN Client will launch. You will be prompted for the university’s VPN address, which is vpn.hs-flensburg.de. Then click Connect.
- Next, a window will open where you should change the group to “HSFL Students” and then re-enter your Flensburg University of Applied Sciences login credentials*.
- After clicking OK, the encrypted connection to the university is established.
Setting up the network drives
The VPN also allows you to access certain drives and your personal folder on FUAS’ computers.
In order to access these drives from your Windows laptop or Macbook, first, you need to activate the VPN connection as described above.
Connect a network drive in MacOS:
- Go to > connect server > mount the server address of the network drive’s path (see below) Please note, that you have to add smb:// at the beginning, e.g. smb://asterix.wi.fh-flensburg.de/NAME
Faculties 1 & 2:
The network drives are announced and serviced by the member of teaching staff in charge of each lab individually.
Network drives Faculty 4 (Business Administration and Business Informatics):
- Drive: K: (Drive for members of teaching staff) \\asterix.wi.hs-flensburg.de\NAME
- Drive: W: (Your personal folder) \\asterix.wi.hs-flensburg.de\home$\username
Now you have to enter your name under “connection for different user name”: wi\you-username + password. Confirm this setting by hitting “OK” and “Finish”. You will be able to access the network drives via your Windows Explorer (Windows key + E) just a moment later.
