VPN access

Certain websites are only accessible from the university network. That’s when you will need our VPN – if you log into the VPN, your laptop will be part of the university network.

Why do you need VPN?

You will need to be logged into our Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access websites such as Statista.de or the WISO.net data base. Our VPN will also let you log in to FUAS network drives. Simply put, what happens is this: If you activate the VPN connection, the internet traffic on your laptop or computer is encrypted, tunnelled and then decrypted again by FUAS’ firewall. Or, to say it differently, you enter the web from within FUAS because your laptop becomes a part of our university network once you activate the VPN connection.

VPN access

FUAS uses the Cisco VPN solution. So you will need the so-called Cisco AnyConnect Client. You can download it from the following sites:

Please note: To install the VPN client successfully, the latest version of Java has to be installed on your device.

This is how it’s done:

  1. Go to the following website: https://vpn.hs-flensburg.de (both Windows and Mac computers)
(Please keep in mind that https://vpn.hs-flensburg.de cannot be accessed from within the university.)
Should there be a problem with the website’s security certificate, click “Laden dieser Webseite fortsetzen (nicht empfohlen)”/”Continue to load the website (not recommended)”.
  2. In the window that opens now, you set the group to FHFL-Studierende (FUAS students) and enter your user name username (e.g. abcd1234 – do not use your e-mail address made up of your first and last name) and your password.
  3. After you logged in to the website, the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client will be downloaded and installed automatically. Modern browsers often don’t support automatic installation. If automatic installation fails, a window with information on this will open. In this case, please download the client from this window and install it manually.
  4. Once it has been installed successfully, the Cisco VPN Client will open. You will be asked for FUAS’ VPN address, it’s vpn.hs-flensburg.de. Now click Connect.
  5. In the window that opens now, you set the group to FHFL-Studierende (FUAS students) and enter your user name and password again.
  6. Now just click OK and the encrypted connection to the university network will be set up.

Please bear in mind that all your data will now be tunnelled via the university’s internet connection. Try to avoid streaming videos (e.g. from YouTube or similar services) or downloading large amounts of data and disconnect once you don’t need the connection anymore.

Setting up the network drives

The VPN also allows you to access certain drives and your personal folder on FUAS’ computers.

In order to access these drives from your Windows laptop or Macbook, first, you need to activate the VPN connection as described above.

Connect a network drive in Windows:

  • Windows 7: Computer > Extras > mount the server address of the network drive’s path (see below)
  • Windows 8 + 10: Computer > mount the server address of the network drive’s path (see below)

Connect a network drive in MacOS:

  • Go to > connect server > mount the server address of the network drive’s path (see below) Please note, that you have to add smb:// at the beginning, e.g. smb://asterix.wi.fh-flensburg.de/NAME

Faculties 1 & 2:

The network drives are announced and serviced by the member of teaching staff in charge of each lab individually.

Network drives Faculty 4 (Business Administration and Business Informatics):

Now you have to enter your name under “connection for different user name”: wi\you-username + password. Confirm this setting by hitting “OK” and “Finish”. You will be able to access the network drives via your Windows Explorer (Windows key + E) just a moment later.
