Compared to the situation in other German cities finding a place to live in Flensburg is fairly easy. Whether you prefer some peace and quiet or whether you like to live in the centre of action, with a bit of luck you may even have a view on the harbour – here are some tips to make finding your home away from home easier for you.

You have the choice between private accommodation and the student dormitories on and near campus. The prices for rent in Flensburg are below the German average and finding accommodation is easier than in a lot of other cities. We do, however, recommend you start looking for a place to live as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary stress.

Student dormitories

As the student residences in Flensburg are not run by the universities, admission to a course of study does not automatically come with a room. You will have to submit your applications for a room or an apartment in one of Flensburg’s four halls of residence with the Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein (the Association for Student Affairs here in the region).

Please visit the Studentenwerk’s website to apply for accommodation. As the application form is not entirely available in English, we have compiled this guide to make the process a little easier for our international students:

The halls of residence to choose from are:

  • Sandberg
    Kanzleistr. 77-85b, 24943 Flensburg; average rent: € 212 per month
  • Campus-Wohnheim
    Thomas-Fincke-Str. 3-5, 24943 Flensburg; average rent: € 232 per month
  • Haus Flensburg
    Kanzleistr. 75, 24943 Flensburg; rents range from € 194 to 292 per month depending on the type of accommodation
  • Norderburse
    Prof.-Mensing-Str. 1, 24937 Flensburg; average rent: € 194 per month

Please note:

  • Rooms in the halls of residence may only be rented for complete semesters, i.e. for a minimum period of 6 months at a time (1 March – 31 August for the summer semester and 1 September – 28/29 February for the winter semester). Rent payments must be made for six months even if you only wish to stay in Flensburg for a shorter period of time.
  • As the student residences are run by the Studentenwerk, FUAS has no influence on the success of individual applications. However, international students are usually given a certain preference.
  • The halls of residence are not equipped with pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. A limited number of pillows and blankets is available; these must be cleaned or bought new at your own expense at the end of the renting period. Bed-linen is not provided.

Private Accommodation

Due to increasing student numbers, the situation on Flensburg’s housing market has gotten more and more competitive over the last years. In addition to the general shortage of inexpensive housing available, those rooms and apartments that are up for rent usually come unfurnished.
