Project description

In this Inno!Nord workshop project we aim to use open source software to develop a low-threshold planning tool for heat storage to be used in complex heat supply systems.
 With the help of open tools this will enable the planning of thermal energy storage systems in heating distribution networks to be made both transparent and comprehensible for all stakeholders involved: municipalities, planning companies or operators.

 This can increase acceptance and decision-making power, accelerate the implementation of specific projects and, above all, avoid bad investments in poorly dimensioned energy storage systems.

Over the past few years, ZNES has collaboratively developed simulation and optimisation tools which can be used to plan the design and operation of thermal plants and systems.
 Among other things, these tools have already been used in transfer projects to support the regional practice partners involved in the assessment of key technologies for the heating transition. Because the energy transition in the electricity sector is already very advanced in northern Schleswig-Holstein, sector coupling and heat storage were of great importance in the projects.

As open-source software is used with open data, the planning tools have spread quickly in the scientific community. However, other groups find it difficult to intuitively access them on their own. The aim of the project is therefore to further develop the tools in such a way that they can be used by as many people involved in planning as possible in a low-threshold and needs-based manner in order to jointly dimension and optimally operate heat storage in sustainable heat supply systems.
