Relax and settle in—admission is on us! The talk will most likely be held in English for our international guests, but the speaker is equally ready to speak German.

Black holes rank among the cosmos’ most extreme phenomena—and they stretch our minds to the limit. At the singularity, even our most robust physical theories break down. Beyond the event horizon, no signal can return, so these objects mark an absolute boundary to what we can observe. Still, we’ve learned a great deal about them. This story begins with Einstein’s revolution in our understanding of space and time, weaves through decades of theoretical debate, and culminates in the first-ever image of a black hole’s shadow. Parallel to that is how our brains grapple with concepts that defy direct sight, measurement, or simple description. Drawing on insights from physics education and cognitive science, the lecture shows how the instruments and methods we build not only expand but sometimes also limit our ability to think about the universe. No prior physics knowledge is needed—just bring your curiosity for what happens when reality pushes human understanding to its edge!
