The students of our master's degree programme Applied Bio and Food Sciences invite you to this year's Annual Scientific Conference: AnSciCon WS 2024/25.

This year's topic is: "Innovative Biotechnological Approaches: From Marine Fungal Biodiversity to the Use of Whey as a Byproduct for Bioethanol Production".

Topic

This Scientific Conference offers a cohesive platform for discussions on biotechnology, sustainability, food sciences, and bioresource utilization.

The Projects

The master’s students of Applied Bio and Food Sciences have worked on four diverse topics, with two focused on the characterization of marine fungi and the other two on whey fermentation.

These acronyms represent distinct research projects. Here’s a refined description for each:

  1. BMF-PACE - Biodiscovery of Marine Fungi: Preservation & Application in Circular Economy

    This project compares preservation techniques to find the best method for sustaining marine fungi and explores their potential to grow in whey for future sustainable applications.

  2. CAMF - Classification and Molecular Insights of Undiscovered Marine Fungi with Bioeconomy Prospects

    The CAMF project aims to discover, classify, and analyze unknown marine fungi through DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis by identifying fungi with potential bioactive compounds.

  3. REWELS - Exploring Novel Strategies to Reduce Fermentation Time in Whey-to-Ethanol Production Using Lactase and Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    This project investigates innovative strategies to speed up the fermentation process in whey-to-ethanol production. By using lactase and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the goal is to improve efficiency in bioethanol production, making the process faster and potentially yielding more ethanol.

  4. WHEY-KM - Whey Harvest for Ethanol Yield Using Kluyveromyces marxianus

    WHEY-KM focuses on using Kluyveromyces marxianus, a yeast known for fermenting lactose in whey, to maximize ethanol yield. This project likely seeks to enhance bioethanol production by optimizing whey fermentation specifically with this yeast strain.
